Collateral Echoes

Collateral Echoes is a powerful extended reality experience by artist Baff Akoto, presented as part of Sheffield DocFest’s Alternate Realities 2025 programme at Site Gallery. The piece explores the legacy of state violence and systemic injustice, commemorating Black and migrant Britons who have died following contact with police since 1969.

What We Did
We collaborated with the artist to produce the technical backbone of the immersive installation. Our work included:

• Full motion capture of choreographed performance elements
• Virtual production using real-time tools to blend performance, narrative and digital environment
• Development of an interactive VR experience that allows audiences to enter and reflect within a contemplative space of grief, care and memory
• 3D pipeline support across character setup, environment integration and deployment

Working closely with Baff Akoto’s vision, we helped bring to life an emotionally resonant experience that bridges documentary practice with immersive storytelling.

Impact
Premiering at Sheffield DocFest 2025, Collateral Echoes engaged audiences in deep reflection on memory, injustice and resistance. The project sits at the intersection of art and activism, using immersive technology not just as a medium, but as a space for communal witnessing and historical accountability.
