LA CULTURA: Augmented Reality Sculptures

LA CULTURA is an Augmented Reality sculpture series by artist Baff Akoto, commissioned by Meta Open Arts. This immersive work extends Akoto’s ongoing exploration of diasporic cultural formation, focusing on Afro-descended communities in the River Plate region of South America — a site historically central to the transatlantic trade of enslaved Africans since the 1580s.

What We Did
We supported the technical production of this AR experience, which blends digital sculpture with spatial sound. Our work enabled:

• The creation and deployment of AR sculptures accessible via mobile platforms
• Integration of stereo sound to deepen sensory engagement
• Accurate spatial placement of sculptures reflecting cultural identity and local context

The series features residents from the River Plate (Rio de la Plata) estuary, embodying the living legacy of Afro-diasporic identity and heritage within post-colonial, Spanish-speaking societies.

Impact
LA CULTURA invites audiences to interact with stories and figures often excluded from dominant cultural narratives. Through a mobile-first, AR format, the work reclaims space for marginalised voices and encourages critical reflection on how colonial legacies continue to shape contemporary Pan-African identity and aesthetics.
