In July 2023, the Royal Armouries Museum in Leeds launched a permanent interactive display showcasing digitally reconstructed Sikh artefacts, marking the first time 3D Sikh objects have been exhibited in a UK museum. This groundbreaking display reimagines three historically significant items from the Sikh martial tradition, offering visitors a deeper, more personal encounter with cultural heritage.
What We Did
Working closely with the Sikh Museum Initiative, we brought these important objects to life through high-fidelity 3D modelling and interactive technology. The artefacts included:
• A Turban Helmet, worn in battle by Sikh warriors
• A Fortress Turban (Dastar Bunga), traditionally worn by elite Akali Nihang warriors
• An ornately decorated shield from Lahore, showcasing master craftsmanship
Our work included:
• Digitally reconstructing the artefacts through 3D scanning, modelling and texture work
• Developing an interactive touchscreen interface that allowed users to rotate, zoom and articulate the objects in real time
• Designing the in-gallery installation to complement the physical objects displayed nearby
Impact
This was the first time the Royal Armouries showcased heritage objects using 3D technology, giving audiences a new level of access and insight. By transforming static museum objects into interactive experiences, the installation invites deeper engagement with the cultural and historical context of Sikh martial traditions.
Now permanently housed in the Oriental Gallery, this installation has become a flagship example of how immersive technology can enrich museum storytelling and representation.
