Mother Nature XR is part of a wider multi-platform project focused on sustainability and climate justice. In this immersive experience, audiences are guided by a powerful Black female avatar who invites them to learn about the climate crisis and take action. The XR experience creates space for empathy, agency and understanding, gamifying environmental themes to inspire positive real world change.
Developed through a collaborative co-design process with young people, Mother Nature XR combines immersive storytelling, interactive environments and environmental themes to engage audiences in conversations around climate justice, representation and collective action.
What We Did
– We co-designed the experience with Powered by CAN, a youth organisation in the Black Country, involving girls aged 11–18 in shaping the story, characters, and structure. Our contributions included:
– Developing a VR experience using Unity, tailored for young audiences
– Creating stylised 3D characters in Blender
– Designing interactive and narrative moments that translate complex climate data into accessible, emotionally resonant learning
– Ensuring the experience promotes behavioural change while centring underrepresented voices in science and innovation
Impact
Mother Nature XR has been presented at a number of major cultural and technology events, including South by Southwest (SXSW), Texas in March 2025, V&A Digital Design Weekend in September 2025 and Birmingham Tech Week in October 2026.
The project has engaged thousands of visitors through immersive storytelling, interactive design and youth led co-creation, demonstrating how emerging technologies can be used to inspire conversations around sustainability, climate justice and environmental action.
