Summer Camp 2022 – Switched On Games

Monday 22 – Friday 26 August 2022

10.00am – 4.00pm

This year Summer Camp will be a fun week of creating alternative games to celebrate the Birmingham Commonwealth Games BOM style! Participants will learn how to:

  • Create manual switches from household items
  • Code LED lights to create their own tech based Baton
  • Recreate retro games using sounds and lights
  • Learn how to solder and set up gaming circuits
  • Play the latest collaborative digital games

Monday 22 August

Children will be creating switches using household items that they will use to play the games create online. They will be coding their own games using Scratch to play and sharing their switch devices.

Tuesday 23 August

Children will be able to experience the technology of the Commonwealth baton and learn about how it was made from Catherine Jones, the creator of it’s technology. They will use the code to create LED lights on Raspberry Pi and design their own baton on Tinkercad.

Wednesday 24 August

Children will be learning how to solder components of their Raspberry Pi. They will craft their own version of the Commonwealth Baton to include the coded LED lights from yesterday’s session.

Thursday 25 August

Children will be going retro in this session, recreating a version of Twister. They will create and manipulate sounds and visuals with sensors that will be activated during the game they code and create.

Friday 26 August

Children will spend the day gaming with John Sear’s Renga game, Mikayla Sinead and her GameJoy as well as PlayStation games with alternative controllers and retro ZX Spectrum games from the 80’s.
